When I began studying at the university, I thought it would be the place to find answers. I was sadly mistaken. The academic world provided me with powerful tools with which to deconstruct all of the scientific literature I could get my callused fingers on, but it didn't offer satisfying applications in real-world scenarios. On the contrary, it encourages a narrower focus on the minutiae. While this provides intellectual entertainment to no end, it hardly does anything to provide real insight. This is what the evidence-based fitness community does so well in my opinion. Evidence-based practitioners comb the current body of scientific literature for solutions to problems as well as novel applications to address those issues. However, while this is a step in the right direction, it's not the end goal. Reading papers is great, but the reality is that most of it is done on untrained subjects and few funding sources are going to shell out a fat stack of cash to see how we can make the fittest humans more fit. While you or I may care deeply about that, the rest of the world probably doesn't give a shit and most researchers are probably going to spend time working with disease models as a result. Even if these studies were valid, there would still be a crucial error in following their findings to the letter. While 'bros' make the mistake of thinking what works for them will work for others, I often see evidence-based coaches make a similar mistake. That is, that they think what works for the average in a study will work for the individual. Enter the world of individualized training prescriptions - the holy grail of fitness. In an ideal world the individual coach weaves academic knowledge, evidence-based methods, and an understanding of an individual's physiology to construct a program. It's hard to argue with this three punch knockout combination. But, the reality is that a LOT of people don't even train hard enough to warrant a perfectly dialed program from a personal coach.... continued

ASSESSING SINGLE-LEG STANCE • Are you a coach or personal trainer?  Here is why you should look at single-leg stance. • Screening single-leg stance provides valuable info: • ✅ How do the feet work to maintain balance? Does the foot pronate, the arch collapse? Do they over grip with the toes?  We're looking for a slight bias towards the outside of the foot maintaining the points of contact: toes, base of the 1st metatarsal, base of the 5th metatarsal, heel. • ✅ What's their frontal plane stability like (posterior view )? Does the non-support hip fall?  The non-support hip should remain level with the supoort hip (or slightly rise ) which indicates the support side glute med is doing its job abducting the hip to keep the pelvis level. • ✅ What's their hip extension like? Do they fully extend through the hip or does the knee flex? Avoiding Injury is the name of the game-Injury Prevention! . If I had to guess, I would say out of all the people I work with/have worked with I’d guess 85% of them have had some degree of lower back pain. . That 85% generally did the things society does that creates the muscle imbalances that cause people to have pain. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods, overall tightness, and favoring one side or the other in the hips. . I believe in solving the problem as a whole-looking at the entire picture. This includes direct lower back exercises. Start out with the basics and advance them as needed! This exercise is more on the advanced side because of the stability involved as well as the isometrics. Squat variations: Half, quarter, box and other variations of squats are a tool that we can go to when training athletes. In this instance, we are utilizing a squat to box, resulting in around a half squat ROM. In this example this type of squat at this stage of the program served a few purposes: ◾Replicate match demands, as we came closer to competition we wanted to achieve enhanced strength in these more limited ROM's often seen in scrummaging and breakdown work. ◾Reduced ROM for reduced muscle soreness, training load was higher in this block in terms of on-field work, owing to the start of a camp and so reduced soreness was beneficial to allow players to train without soreness in the higher amount of technical sessions. ◾Warm up sets could really target more 'speed strength' qualities and utilization of the stretch/shortening cycle. ◾Note: We ran a contrast exercise of seated vertical jump. There are a few other instances where I have liked using half squats including: ◾Allowing athletes to feel what a new weight on the bar feels like with greater confidence afforded by the reduced ROM and bench (+ spotters ) ◾In sports where greater strength in these specific ROM's are beneficial e.g. Volleyball and basketball athletes. It is important to remember that this does not mean they should entirely replace full/other variants in my opinion. ◾A new stimulus for the athlete, sometimes variation can help break plateaus and elicit a new response. The above is by no means the only type of squat variation but just one of many. You can play around with tempo, speeds, pauses , ROM's, loading styles and others all to get a different stimulus to an athlete. NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE END GAME. . . Nope! I didn’t get the last move and spent a few hours and days on this one. But it ain’t always about the end game! I loved this climbing problem 😍 . . Because it taught (forced 😂 ) me to improve my climbing technique, rather than use raw strength. And the realisation, I need a lot of work on my dynos! 😂🤣🙈 .
