ARCTIC ADAPTATIONS // NU Architecture Carvings // Venice Biennale in Architecture (2014 ). Project team: Miles Gertler, Lola Sheppard, Mason White. #lateraloffice_arcticadaptations #nunavut #arctic The history of Canada’s North is rife with imported and imposed models from the south. In particular, architecture has been used in the Arctic in several capacities over the last century; as trading post, as mission base, as military defense, as colonizer, and as a tool for social welfare. Rarely understood as a tool of cultural empowerment, architecture in the Arctic has been driven by efficiency and expediency. As architecture ventured northward, it was employed to combat against the harsh local condition and the foreign indigenous culture. This is in stark contrast to traditional Inuit architecture, which used snow, ice and wind orientation to design and build structures.

. . #nunavut #coppermineriver #nunavutterritory #arctictundra #arcticcanada #lupin #lupine

Paying my respects to murdered and disappeared #indigenouswomen before this beautiful, almost joyous, yet heart wrenching #artpiece placed the side of a house in #Apex #Nunavut #nowords How do I dare tie their pain into and AI and Art topic? Because @artimpactai is also about #socialchange , creating the future we want to see. The diversity crisis in #AI is no joke, has serious social (and economic ) consequences. We must not #automate #socialinequalities #Inclusion matters. Tomorrow, we’ll be holding our first workshop of the pancanadian @artimpactai program at @pinnguaq ‘s #makerspace There’s a huge interest from educators and kids!! 😄 I have a feeling we’re going to have very refreshing discussions. 💕 Thank you for this opportunity @canadaartcouncil 🙏

I’m exhausted and in bed for the night, this was the sky when I took the dogs out back for bed time pee. I’m obsessed with this view and I’m going to miss it so much. Reality of preparing to move is starting to kick in and my emotions are all over the place. As I stared at the beautiful arctic sky and ocean, even though I haven’t heard or even thought of this song in probably a decade or more - out of nowhere the @joelplaskett gem “I Love This Town” came into my head. It’s a beauty and fun song, albeit a tribute to another wonderful Canadian town, but it seemed fitting. Now to sleep, and I as I start to doze off I’m reminding myself to find time to enjoy tomorrow. #nunagram #Iqaluit #Nunavut #Arcticbeauty #Arcticskies #sunset

Neha Acharya-Patel joined our recent Arctic field trip in Cambridge Bay as part of her @owuss_ North American Rolex Scholarship 2019. And she's written a blog post about her experience - link in profile. Each year, one young person considering a career in an underwater-related discipline is selected by OWUSS and spends a year working with current leaders in underwater fields to provide a hands-on introduction to underwater and other aquatic-related research and careers. "Neha was an absolute pleasure to work with," comments ONC's community based monitoring manager Ryan Flagg. "She quickly became an integral part of the Ocean Networks Canada Arctic field team in all respects. Aside from being intelligent, focused and hardworking, Neha brought a wide range of dive and science experience, and she had all of us laughing and having fun at every turn. I still can’t believe how lucky we were to have her joins us." Thanks for helping us to #knowtheocean Neha! We should all feel confident in our intelligence. By the way, intelligence to me isn't just being book-smart or having a college degree; it's trusting your gut instincts, being intuitive, thinking outside the box, and sometimes just realizing that things need to change and being smart enough to change it..... #montreal #calgary #edmonton #ottawa #ontario #labrador #yukon #saskatchewan #quebec #princeedwardisland #nunavut #northwestterritories #newbrunswick #manitoba #britishcolumbia #alberta #rich #wealth #market #light #norwish #norwich #chelsea #london

Tomorrow we will reach Pond Inlet at 72' North, then we plan to sail into the Lancaster Sound on our way through the Northwestpassage. #nunavut , #arctictravel , #hurtigruten , #northwestpassage , #franklinexpedition , #arctic , #explorers , #arctictravel , @hurtigruten , #discovernunavut ,

5 hours in Iqaluit and have already had a dozen conversations about AI and the Arts with residents, artists, children and strangers. AI will affect all of us and all of us need to play a role in determining what we want this technology doing and for whose benefit. Our workshop starts tomorrow at 9:00 with our incredible partners at @pinnguaq and @nunavut_arts_and_crafts and huge thanks to the @canada council for making this possible through the Digital Strategy Fund. Spirit in the Snow . . I think digital mediums instill a hesitance to shoot and think big . With a physical print, your eye takes its time to consume a composition. Whether it is walking around a large print, or bringing a photograph up close, you see things, feel things, differently . The purist in me thinks that is how images were meant to be experienced. Not instantaneously, in a thumbnail, wedged between other thumbnails, projected via glaring white light, infringed upon by ad banners . No, they are meant to be savored. Studied in isolation. There should be room to think. Studying the work of the masters, you can feel their soul behind each image . Over the last year I've started shaking off that hesitation - if I'm thinking big, I shouldn't be presenting small, even if it won't convey the same way on a screen . This image, Spirit in the Snow, is a special one for me, as it was the shot I had in mind when I went looking for polar bears in the high north . The decision to shoot primarily with a 200mm prime rather than the massive telephotos was to get as much context as possible, while ensuring the subject (even when dwarfed by the magnificent surrounds ), was perfectly crisp . I released a heavily cropped version of this, which I still like very much, but it was a compromise. I was too focused on how it would translate on a small screen. And I think it missed half the point. . Here it is as orignally intended ..

Fun Fact Friday. Willow ptarmigans and rock ptarmigans both have large arctic distributions with rock ptarmigan ranging up to north Elsmere Island. Male willow ptarmigans in mating plumage have a redder plumage than rock ptarmigan, while male rock ptarmigans in non-mating plumage have distinctive black eyelines. Females are more difficult to tell apart but the rock ptarmigan has somewhat finer markings and a smaller black bill. . . .
