The newest plate on the project, made half an hour ago and completing the set for @portaferryrnli We’ve made a private commission this morning too. Another first on the journey to be up early, make a portrait, stroll back to the hotel for breakfast then make the one you see here of the three Helmsmen — all by 10am! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #northernireland #portaferry

‪2316hrs...result! Today I’ve: packed Neena after my time with Carrybridge RNLI; attended to phone calls, emails and social media; driven for 3 hours; checked into my hotel; met the @newcastlernli crew and polished tomorrow’s glass. An early finish, all things considered! 🙌🏻 #lifeboatstationproject #notforthefeinthearted

‪I’ve arrived in Newcastle, County Down, and I’m now into double-figures of @rnli stations remaining. As I opened Neena’s side door to grab my bags, I saw the Mission Map with fresh eyes. Looking at the orange “done” dots, I thought: “You know, I’m really getting there now.” Good, eh?‬ #lifeboatstationproject #rnli #thisisanadventure

The project keeps on rollin' and the days are flying by with the incredible lifeboat volunteers of Northern Ireland. The warm welcomes I've been receiving have been so moving too. Now it's time to move on from the inland stations of @eknrnli and Carrybridge — I'm heading back to the coast ready for @newcastlernli tomorrow and Kilkeel on Sunday. See you there? While I make the three hour drive to Newcastle RNLI this afternoon ready for our big day tomorrow, you might like to catch up with yesterday’s live interview with Mark Patterson on BBC Radio Foyle. Search for that combo and I’m sure you’ll find it on @bbcsounds Failing that, the link’s on my Twitter and FB. The interview starts 37 minutes in. Life on the road can be pretty seamless but, finally, I have a window to share a couple of things with you. The atrocious weather has played a huge part in proceedings over the last couple of days but, somehow, we managed to squeeze most of the photographs into gaps between the squalls and before the wind really came a howlin’ through. Pictured: Liam O’Brien’s freshly-made portrait on a sheet of 12x10 inch glass sitting in a tray of water. Liam is the Redbay Station Mechanic and you can see his pride and joy — the station’s Trent class lifeboat — over his shoulder on a mooring buoy, always ready. And there’s one more detail of note: Liam’s sitting on the red basalt rock that encrusts the local coastline, the very reason this area is known as Redbay. Heartfelt thanks to Liam and the Redbay crew for making me feel so welcome. Like many others before them, they couldn’t do enough to help me and wouldn’t have it that I spent a single penny during my stay, including my accommodation across the road. The support I’m receiving for my journey is gathering pace. After so many difficult years, words really can’t describe my gratitude. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #northernireland #redbay

Land ho! Northern Ireland on the horizon. It’s been a long day but very smooth going. I’ve popped in to meet the excellent Redbay crew, been steered towards a nice restaurant for a lovely bit of fish, spent an hour or so polishing ten sheets of glass and now I’m all prepared for the first photographs of Mission 19 tomorrow morning. Everything’s ready! It’s one of those times when it’s hard to imagine that I’ll be in Northern Ireland this time tomorrow. And just 48 hours from now, I’ll have photographed the first lifeboat station of Mission 19. With everything in place, I now feel relaxed and excited for the month ahead. Cheers! The last of the summer’s print orders are now on their way to their new homes and the final preparations for Monday’s departure are in full swing. As an aside, you may not know that I was a printmaker and retoucher to other photographers, artists, ad agencies and design groups for over 12 years before I embarked on The Lifeboat Station Project. Around 2012, there was a point in that chapter when I realised the challenges were starting to run out. My hard drives and print table were constantly full of other people’s work and I was very conscious that my own photography had gone by the wayside. In short, it was an interesting and relatively stable tangent but not what I intended. So when I started thinking about how I might change that situation, there was one vital criterion that I was determined to realise: the print table should be full of my work rather than other people’s. This little espresso cup holds the worn down pencils that I’ve used since January 2015 to sign the prints that I sell to help fund the project. As I signed those prints this week, it dawned on me that this little cup signifies the realisation of that dream. #lifeboatstationproject

This year, we're giving our supporters a unique and special way to commemorate loved ones who will never be forgotten by adding their names to the side of a brand-new Shannon class lifeboat. We can now reveal that the #LaunchAMemory lifeboat will be stationed at Invergordon in Scotland, where the volunteers, pictured here by @lordlowe as part of his #LifeboatStationProject , have been saving lives for more than 40 years.

7 years ago, the gift of a light bulb moment forged the early sparks of The Lifeboat Station Project. 2 years later, after lots of thinking, honing and refining, the @rnli gave me their blessing to start creating my vision for a huge photographic archive that would shine a light on a band of incredible people — the lifeboat volunteers who selflessly serve others to keep our shores as safe as possible. Over 4 and a half years ago, I photographed my first lifeboat station and, well, I just kept going. Over 2000 volunteers from 136 lifeboat stations now feature in the portraits we’ve made together. Those early sparks have become a roaring furnace that’s lighting up the coastline far more strongly than I ever dreamed possible. Next week, I’m heading to Northern Ireland for the final mission of 2019. By the end, I’ll have completed 62% of the project and the number of lifeboat stations remaining will be in double-figures for the first time — just 90 to go when I resume my travels in 2020! If you enjoy following the journey and would like to contribute to its future, head for the blue button on my homepage where you can find all the ways to pledge your support. Pictured: One of those early sparks when Allen Frary, Wells-next-the-Sea Coxswain, posed with his freshly-made portrait on glass. A moment from the very first mission back in January 2015 and an image that the mighty @instagram used to illustrate a post about the project. As you may have gathered, yesterday’s Lifeboat Gala at Eyemouth was simply splendid. Thank you to everyone who came along to say hello and even bought a keyring or two. Check out my Story to see some of the lifesavers who stopped by as well as the moment pictured here, which was the cherry on the cake — presenting the crew with their limited edition prints in person. Not often I get to do that! In a week’s time, I’ll be hitting the road again, another big one. Standby for itinerary news. I just need to update the Mission Map and I’ll be right back. From Anstruther to Eyemouth: Here’s my second ‘Mission Grid’. A shorter journey this time, so “just” 27 glass plate photographs from 6 lifeboat stations over a 2 week period in June — and this doesn’t include all the private commissions I made along the way to help fund the journey! When I posted the first one in May, I mentioned that I’m always trying to think of new ways to show you my journey, to keep it interesting and convey the sheer scale of it. Also, to illustrate why I call each leg of the journey a ‘mission’ rather than simply a ‘trip’. I hope you generally get a sense of that anyway but this is perhaps the most graphic way that I’ve come up with so far. I’m feeling pretty chuffed to be up-to-date once again this evening. I’ve been a little remiss with my traditional #LSPthrowdown lately — the photographs of my apron that bring the end of each mission to a close. I forgot to post the one from @rnlirhyl in April and then totally forgot to even shoot one at Eyemouth on 22nd June! So, I’m hoping this photograph of Helen Hastings, Eyemouth’s brand new Shannon class, is an ample stand-in. Enormous thanks once again to the 109 @rnli volunteers who feature in my photographs at the six lifeboat stations I visited in June. Fact Friday Richard Matthew Evans (Dic Evans ) was a lifeboatman from Moelfre. He was involved in 179 launches and the saving of 281 lives during his 50 years service and is one of only 5 men to be awarded the RNLI gold medal, the highest accolade awarded by the institution and the equivalent of the Victoria Cross for bravery at sea. Geography Lesson: There’s an aspect to the project that I really enjoy, a dimension that was unforeseen at the start: being on certain stretches of coastline where I can see what’s been, what’s to come or sometimes both. @whitstablelifeboat was a great example in September last year, looking north across the Thames Estuary towards the Essex coastline that I photographed in 2015. 13th June 2019: It’s rare that I introduce new work from a station with the boathouse view — it’s sometimes difficult to appreciate their full glory on a smartphone screen (you need to see the original plate or a print for that ). But this one is so blissfully minimal that I think it can be appreciated at any size. This is also a photograph that starkly reminds us that the job is the same whatever the station. No matter what the type of lifeboat, the launching mechanism or the nature of the coastline, a band of dedicated volunteers will drop everything at a moment’s notice to launch their lifeboat and help somebody in difficulty at sea. Ladies and gentlemen, je vous présente the view from @rnli_kinghorn on a dreich Thursday morning, a handmade photograph on 12x10 inch glass. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #kinghorn

First portrait of Mission 18: My journey around the Forth coast got off to a fine start on Tuesday 11th June with this portrait of Michael Bruce, @rnli_anstruther Coxswain. I usually have an idea or two up my sleeve, but rather than “impose” it, I like to ask the person I’m about to photograph whether or not they have any preconceptions about how their portrait might look. It’s a collaboration, you see. A dialogue. I’m not “taking” photographs. We’re making them together. In the case of Michael’s portrait, though, it was very satisfying that we both had the same idea — the station’s beautiful old Mersey class ‘Kingdom of Fife’ sitting in the background, peaceful but always ready.
