Buck would try to stick to the patches of snow on this frozen lake during our trek on Baffin Island. A smart move on his part. Soon though, the snow almost totally disappeared and he had to overcome his obvious fear of walking on smooth lake ice. . . . With some patience, along with some encouragement, praise and, of course, dog treats. I was able to help him over come his fear of walking on the glare ice and we ended up making it across two large alpine lakes in decent time. . . Later that year I was hanging out with Buck’s original owner who said he remembered Buck falling through the ice when he was a puppy. I imagine that’s where Buck’s fear stemmed from. . . 👉 @bucktheadventuredog 🐕 🛷 ❄️ 🏔 . . @firstmatekasikspetfoods #MyFirstMate @gerbergear #hellotrouble #dogsledding #dogs #mountains @msr_gear #jbadventurer #bucktheadventuredog #adventuredogs #pets #dogsled #trekkingwithdogs #campingwithdogs @muttluks #explorecanada @travelnunavut #nunavut #auyuittuqnationalpark #akshayukpass #outdoorlife #wintercamping #optoutside #adventure @ruffwear #baffinisland #akshayukpass #camping #survivalgear #survivalist #bushcraft #expedition #arctic

From peaks to troughs. Camp had to be set up in strategic points to avoid being too close to the glacial run-off rivers, and out of harm's way from the frequent rock falls. Since temperatures were reaching some of its highest, glaciers were melting at uneven rates. The river could swell to 200x within a few hours. The summer heat also brought in an abundance of mosquitoes. The record heat in the Arctic increased freeze-thaw weathering, which made the rockfalls from the vertical edges far more likely to put our lives in danger. It often took us hours to find a good spot.

Tarn lakes and jagged edges. Where the vertical pushes the imagination as far as the horizontal would go. One can't appreciate space without being in a place that none other goes.

Looking from Pangnirtung, into the Akshayuk pass, a rainbow terminated in the fjord I had just spent an eternity trekking through. I felt there was something symbolic about this. But at the time I was too preoccupied with sorting where we were going to sleep that night, as our plane aborted it's landing due to high winds, prolonging our stay by an extra day.

On the last night of our Arctic expedition, I took a stroll at night and took this photo. A moon so big, and a sky so large, I felt an insignificant scale on this massive planet. The Canadian flag fluttered in the wind, I guess to show how people like to claim lands and territories, but the symbolism of the ragged material as if a polar bear had mauled it, gives testament that we never really do own the land and that nature dominates.

371
November 2018

In the Arctic, the winds can change direction at the drop of a hat. The pressure changes between mountains can create powerful wind tunnels in the fjords. Storms roll in with little warning due to the ever-changing position of the polar jetstream. ** On the last day of our Arctic expedition, we battled through 80kmph winds and horizontal rain in order to call the boat in, which would take us back to the Inuit community. Emergency shelters (as seen in the distance ) are intended to protect from polar bear encounters and adverse weather conditions. There aren't that many shelters, so we were lucky to wait out the worst of the storm in these Hobbit-like cubby holes.

Mount Asgard on #BaffinIsland is shaped like no other #mountain I know. The bizarrely flat-topped tower on the right is a massive 2015m high. Asgard is the realm of the gods in Norse mythology. Fitting, as this busy city-like jumble of peaks is surrounded by other mountains named after Thor, Odin, and others. And the stories people share with us... wow. Thank you @suluk46 : - - "Day 7: Looking back up the valley. I'll try to describe what it is like to get out of bed and immediately expose yourself to water that moments ago was actually ice. This water is in the range of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius. Drinking it stings your teeth and causes your brain to freeze momentarily. I wear a drysuit, neoprene gloves and socks, and a balaclava constantly. The river from this point on is slow and wide, with the only remaining section of rapids located at Crater Lake. I exit on river right and take the west trail up and around the lake, looking down at the rapids. They are very runnable, but not with a full pack on the nose and not by myself. It's a short hike to get past them and I put in immediately after to catch a few good class 2 sections before it flattens out again. The river now runs quick and smooth, and I make incredible time floating and paddling the last section of the Weasel River before meeting the fjord that I was dropped off at. - - The cloud ceiling is low, and it rains on and off but I enjoy the trip, the view looking up from the center of the river is such a contrast to looking down at the river from the mountains. I'm lucky enough to experience both. Before I know it, I make out a small orange shelter far on the river’s edge. At first I don't believe I could have made it to the end of the river so quickly, but moments later this river begins to shallow as the tide rolls out. I am forced to hike through the ankle deep water to the rivers edge, and then up and over to the fjord where Overlord lies. - - The wind punishes me as I make my way along the coast. I take shelter in the hut and use the emergency radio to confirm my pickup for the following morning at 10am. Everything seems to be in order. I read through the shelter log book and find roughly 15 pages of entries dating back to 2002. With the last entry being over a year ago. I add a full page report for others to enjoy in the future and get my gear ready for departure in the morning.” - - #thisispackrafting #arcticircle #baffinisland #akshayukpass #auyuittuqnationalpark #arctic #expedition #suluk46 #ultrali

My best of Thor. The highest vertical cliff face on the planet. With a total altitude of 1675 meters (5496 feet ) it does not rival other mountains in height. But from the actual base, it rises 1250 meters (yes, over a friggin' kilometer! ) sheer vertical with the upper portion being 105 degree angle. That means that the top overhangs itself for a large portion. It is bare of features, requires intense planning and prep to climb, and has taken many lives. No picture can do it justice...you'll just have to go see it for yourself one day. 😀 #thor #mountthor #packrafting #arcticircle #baffinisland #akshayukpass #auyuittuqnationalpark #arctic #expedition #suluk46 #ultralightbackpacking #campinglife #hikinglife #camping #hiking #backpacking

Day 8: The Arctic outhouse at Overlord East Shelter. My pick up time is at 10am. I'm up early, and the day is beautiful. It's almost a waste to leave after having 2 days of rain. I'm tempted to head back in and never return. But then I remember that the is no beer store in there and come to my senses in a panic. The tide has rolled in, but I still have to walk about a kilometer for the water to be deep enough for the boat to land at shore. I can see him in the distance, and I wave to ensure he sees me. My bright orange jacket is like a flare against the grey and green environent. The boat pulls up, I throw my backpack on the front, and I hop on. Peter is driving his boat today, he offers me hot chocloate to warm me up and we sit in his cabin for an hour while he discusses everything from challenges with garbage management, whale hunting, lack of children's activities, to politics in Northern Canada. Peter has been deeply involved with the community and provides incredible insight of the area. As he docks the boat in Pangnirtung, it's a quick handshake and I am off to a homestay in Pangnirtung for the night to have my first shower in 8 days. Want to smell my armpit? My flight back is in 2 days and I begin to feel it is ending too fast. I barely have time to reflect on the trip and before I know it I am on a small plane with only memories of what is probably the greatest adventure of my life. #packrafting #arcticircle #baffinisland #akshayukpass #auyuittuqnationalpark #arctic #expedition #suluk46 #ultralightbackpacking #campinglife #hikinglife #camping #hiking #backpacking #overlord
