Weather. Weather drives so much in climbing. As you plan your climb checking a detailed forecast should be apart of your planning process. There are plenty of books and online courses on weather. Invest in your own security by committing some time to learning the essentials. If you restrict yourself to bluebird days like this, you’ll rarely find yourself in the mountains. #reachtheremote #weather #climbersofinstagram

"It’s a big world out there, go explore, get out of the comfort zone to venture to new terrain, to try new things, to witness the places that excite you and frighten you a little. You never know what awaits you around the corner" ➡️ After one and a half hour of trekking and some scrambling, we come across this hidden gem. One of the natural pools created by Kalamas river. Te Araroa, Day 96 Friday 18th January Havelock > Pelorus Bridge, KM 1773.6 > 1794.8 Distance Walked Today: 21.2km Today we got an early start - well, everyone else did, but I woke up to discover my USB power bank hadn’t charged, and we were about to embark upon at least 7 days on trail without power, so I needed to recharge that power bank before I could set off.

Luckily my power bank has dual inputs to charge twice as fast, but it still meant waiting around a couple of hours whilst everyone else set off without me. After an hour or so I got bored of sitting at the hostel, so I went to a cafe and sat there whilst it charged instead. By about lunch time it was finally time for me to go. The trail starts with a short road walk out of town, before veering to the right down to a bridge and following the true left hand bank of the Pelorus River the rest of the way. This was still technically road walking for most of it, but a rural road with only a few cars as traffic - the worst was having to cover your mouth to avoid dust as they drove past. There was supposed to be a number of stream crossings/water access along the way but they were all dry as far as I could see. It turns out Erin clambered up a dry river bed to get to a trickle she could hear, but in general I think it’s best not to rely on there being water here during a dry summer. After I while I left the road for a few km along the river-side edge of some farm paddocks before entering a short walking track that lead to a swing bridge, then across a road bridge above a popular looking swimming hole. The Pahadi people have the biggest of heart and warmest of smiles that you come across on your journeys in the Himalayas. Their daily grind is most physically demanding with very little means. But they seem at home and in tune with nature. Met this toothy gentleman enroute the Great Himalayan National Park. A smile and simple🙏 is enough to strike up a convo.

Operation Mt. Gothics: coming to a weekend near you this summer. . . . Full disclosure: not sure if the weather will let us safely attempt. But if all goes well, myself and my motley crew (ok, @thecozyhipster and @maggierennoldson ) will be taking our shot at this summit. The first possibly FND related episode I can identify was on an expedition on Mt. Gothics. I had to turn back, and I was mortified. I had no idea what was happening or why I suddenly became so weak. I still don’t understand it. All these years, though, this mountain has been my nemesis. I’ve always said I’d come back for it. Since I got so very very sick, getting to the top has been my recovery goal. I’ve long said, I won’t consider myself fully past this era and struggle until I can stand on top of that mountain. It’s given me something tangible to work towards, which has been immeasurably valuable on my recovery journey. And now, soon, I’ll be there.

Te Araroa, Day 95 Thursday 17th January Linkwater > Havelock, KM 1759.7 > 1773.6 Distance Walked Today: 13.9km Today started with a quick walk back to Queen Charlotte Tavern at Linkwater, where we were dropped off the night before. This place served drinks and breakfast and we were joined by a European walker by the name of Mateusz who was the first fellow walker I found to be carrying a serious cameras, gimbal and drone. After an extended breakfast-slash-dinner break we headed on down the road. Luckily, for most of this way there was a walking path that followed the road meaning little actual walking next to traffic and a much more pleasant experience for all of us. For the next five kilometres or so, with flat ground, I was ahead and making a swift pace. I was listening to Tim Minchin and really enjoying the flat path - not having to think about where my feet were going, or whether or not cars were about to take me out. At the start of the day’s small climb I waited for the others to catch up. From here I let them go ahead because I’m usually slower on the climbs, although this time I caught up with Erin once or twice as she was paused to take some photos. I never passed her because I’d have to stop to photograph the view as well. Some time after the peak of the climb (only 150m or so ) I came across Erin and Christian having a break next to a waterfall. Erin told me to try the water - it was beautifully cold like a chilled drink out of the fridge! From here it was a short downhill-then-flat walk into town. We got some dinner for the night, then did some last minute prep for the next section - charging batteries and downloading podcasts. Photo: Fujifilm Klasse W / Kodak Ektar 100

This place quickly became of my favorite places I’ve ever been to in Utah. It wasn’t easy to get there, and it involved some class 4/easy class 5 climbing, and navigating through the hot, Utah desert, but camping in a modern day Garden of Eden made it so worth it. #whyihike #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor @eddiebauer Choose Adventure | . . . . . #keepitwild #folkscenery #wildernessculture #beautifuldestinations #discoverearth #goexplore #travel #earthfocus #earthpix #adventure #roamtheplanet #mountains #moodygrams #roamtheplanet #theoutbound #natgeo #earthvisuals #visualsofearth #artofvisuals #utahisrad #visitutah #utah #tlpicks #nathanleeallen #canon #mycanonstory

I couldn’t resist a Waterfall Wednesday! 💦 I’m also so excited to give these boots another work out in the red rocks this weekend! I have become rather obsessed with the desert, it has this draw that keeps bringing me back. I have been so lucky this year to get to explore several different areas of the desert, and to have some rad friends who are down for an adventure! Bring on the (long ) weekend! This beach was one of the most beautiful places we stumbled across on our road trip throughout New Zealand. Somehow, we made it JUST in time for sunset and it was out of this world! Orange faded to pink which faded to purple before the whole sky was filled with about a million stars. It’s crazy how a photograph can bring back such vivid memories with one look - I can’t wait to head back!

MOM GUILT! How do you deal? // Getting out and being an individual is so important. Not only for you, but for your kids as well. You’re a better mom when you’re not burnt out! Amiright!? No matter how many times we are told this, we still feel it. Here are five tips to help you get out SANS the guilt. 1. Prep Meals for when you are away 2. Get clothes ready for the kids for the days you are gone 3. Make a list - birthday party, sport, favorite foods etc. 4. Leave a shirt that you’ve worn behind - if your babe wakes up in the night the smell of you will help! 5. Remember that YOU are a good mom and you would never leave your babies with someone who didn’t love them!! Most of all ENJOY your time away because you deserve it!!! Also don’t forget to tag #btbamamas so we can see your adventures! #btbamamas #borntobeadventurous 📷: @burgessadventures

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am — a reluctant enthusiast… a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.” - Edward Abbey||| . . . #liveauthenic #instatravel #artistfound #andshesdopetoo #optoutside #tentdiaries #artofvisuals #tripyoursoul #magical_shots_ #wilderness #thruhike #wherethewildthingsare #thetrek #naturephotography #theviewfromhere #wildernessculture #whyihike #womenwhohike #continentaldividetrail #hyperlitemountaingear

High winds in Great Sand Dunes National Park=sand storms I don’t think there was an inch of my body that wasn’t covered in sand. Just add a couple drops of water for the best natural exfoliation ever! It doesn’t look like much but climbing sand dunes is a lot of work. I was dying a little.🥵Star Dune✨ is the highest in the park and it’s not easy to get to but going back down is seriously so much fun....you might actually consider climbing it again.
