UPCOMING EXHIBIT—Looking at You From a Distance Not Too Far: Work by Marvin Tate, August 15-October 27, 2019. . Marvin Tate is a performance poet, lyricist, published author, collected visual artist and educator. He is known for his biographical art in the form of assemblage, portraits and landscapes composed of found objects and fragments from everyday life. Finding beauty and subtlety in “ev’day” life, objects and people is inherent in Tate’s narrative, which speaks of personal and family history while addressing a broader collective memory through social and political commentary. . Painted tintypes played a significant role in American culture for a period of about four decades, continuing the tradition of vernacular portraiture. However, the introduction in 1888 of the Kodak camera with flexible roll film allowed anyone to be a photographer and hastened the demise of tintype photography. Historians have emphasized that the importance of #folkart is its expression of the culture of the common man. The painted tintype, without a doubt, fills this criterion. . UPCOMING EXHIBIT—Jerry’s Map, August 15, 2019-January 12, 2020. . Jerry’s Map features selections from the map of an imaginary world that Michigan-based artist Jerry Gretzinger began 56 years ago. This vast project, which started as one doodle, now consists of around 3,600 individual 8 x 10 panels conjoined to make a single large-scale map filled with cities, countryside, rivers, airports and more facilities representing everyday life in this other dimension. Gretzinger paints and collages pieces of the map based on randomly-generated instructions drawn from a special deck of cards. Rules like "VOID" and "SCAN," examples of what appears on the cards, dictate Gretzinger's every brushstroke. . Free artist reception with Gretzinger and Chicago artist Marvin Tate Thursday, August 15, 5-8 p.m. . Image: Jerry Gretzinger (American, b. 1942 ). This image reproduces the first work Justin Duerr created in his story scroll cycle in 1999. The first three scrolls he created were left at a 24-hour post office, late at night, while he was mailing copies to people. Upon realizing that he left the originals at the post office, Duerr headed back, to find they had been taken to the dumpster, and he was not allowed to check for them. In 2007, Duerr began connecting his scrolls, so the lost originals would now be scrolls 01, 03 and 05. . “This was in an abandoned hotel that I lived in for a few months. [My] drawing, which eventually grew to be much larger, remained on the stucco of the bricks after the building was demolished a year or so later. The room was on the second or maybe third floor, so passersby were impressed to see a drawing which obviously took months to complete stuck to the side of a building.” — @justinduerr Justin Duerr: Surrender to Survival opens at Intuit on June 27, with an official free opening reception on Thursday, July 25, 5-8 p.m. .
