As much as I love California, I’ve been missing these Pacific Northwest views. I’ll be cruising up to Washington in the next week or two with the van and I couldn’t be more stoked 🚐 I still haven’t named it yet...any suggestions? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Foggy coastal trails & restless seas. Moments like this remind me to appreciate what is right in front of me. To let go of the rest, and just be happy. ⠀ #whyihike #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor @eddiebauer

I hike because it grounds me. It reminds me that life is so much bigger than I will ever know, and it allows me to go slow. To breathe, and just be ↟ ⠀ #whyihike #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor @eddiebauer

I’ve spent the last three weeks based in Napa Valley, California; housesitting the most beautiful home. I’ve been writing, meditating, resting and re-establishing routines. Sleeping in a real bed; cooking in a real kitchen. Snuggling with the cutest pets. After so much time spent traveling, unwinding for a few weeks felt like an actual dream. ⠀ This morning I woke up in Big Sur. In a truck. No bathroom, no shower, no coffee maker. But, views. Waves. Fresh air and freedom. Feels good to be back. Out on that open road ↟

It isn’t always like this. ⠀ Sometimes you run into unexpected weather. Uninviting landscapes. Harsh light. Crowds. Mosquitos. Cold. Washed out roads. Dead camera batteries. Low snack supplies. Fear. Anything is possible when you put yourself out there in the world. It isn’t always a dream. But if you can love it for what it is, you’re bound to find yourself in moments like this. Literally, and metaphorically. And once you do, it can be hard to give up. ⠀ #whyihike #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor @eddiebauer pc: @nathanielwise

Do you guys ever feel like you’re juggling so many things at once that you just want to pack a bag, grab a tent and disappear into the wilds? 🤓 That’s how I’ve been feeling this past week as I try to downsize my life even more than I already have. I finally decided it was taking up too much of my time, so I rented another storage unit. But a smaller one, so still an improvement. I have so much renewed respect for minimalists. Getting rid of things you still love is no easy task. That said, I’m officially putting my Xterra up for sale since the van will be ready before long! Check out my stories if interested. Stoked to be hitting trails again soon ↟

Time to read. Think. Dream. In a beautiful place like this...it’s one of the many reasons #whyihike and why I call the road home. ⠀ Some of my personal favorites...Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck, & The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Two days ago, I hit my one year anniversary of living on the road. It’s funny to think how nervous I was about leaving my apartment to try something new. It seemed like an impossible task. And now, the idea of choosing any one place to settle and live seems like the impossible task. Maybe one day. But for now and the next long while, these are the bedroom views I’ll be searching for. I was thinking I might write a blog post about what it’s been like to live on the road for a year. Thoughts? 🤔

Yesterday I spent the whole morning sorting through my storage unit. And before that, at least two other hours long visits. Stacks on stacks of unread books, favorite photos, a mini chess set, a symphony flute (I was a band nerd ). Clothes I don’t want to get rid of. Shoes I never wear. Pots. Pans. Photo gear. All the things. But I did it. I made a final(ish ) selection of what will go in the van, and what will just have to go. I’m actually selling a lot of it today, in Seattle. Check out my story for details if you’re interested, or if you’re around and feel like saying hi 👋🏻 Thanks for being part of this crazy journey. I promise, it’s just getting started. 🚐

One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. ⠀ -Edward Abbey ⠀ pc: @itsbigben #WhyIHike #LiveYourAdventure #EBContributor @eddiebauer

Life on the road. From California, a few months ago. ⠀ Song is ‘take it slow’ by @garrettkato

April 2019

I’m back from California, and I bought the van. I left it in L.A. to be built, and flew back to Washington. Because as always, I crave the road. As for now, I’m parked in the woods. Sitting in the back of my Xterra. Sipping a margarita and watching storm clouds roll by. Evergreens all around. Life isn’t fancy, but it’s good. It’s everything I could ever ask for, and probably more. ⠀ I spent the weekend housesitting in the country, surrounded by trees and in the company of an adorable Gordon Setter. My mission was to comb through a massive 4’ storage container filled with photos and memories, scrapbook type stuff. As much as I love minimalism, I’m also a collector. So it was difficult, deciding what would stay and what would go. Taking snapshots for the memory, then reluctantly letting each thing go. It was the first step in a much bigger project of clearing out my storage unit and keeping only what will fit in my van. That’s the plan, anyway. ⠀ But for now, here’s to this moment. Wind in the trees, sky overhead. Here’s to earth. What a beautiful place to call home. #earthday

The shock of the real. For a few moments we discover that nothing can be taken for granted, for if this ring of stone is marvelous then all which shaped it is marvelous, and our journey here on earth, able to see and touch and hear in the midst of tangible and mysterious things-in-themselves, is the most strange and daring of all adventures. ⠀ -Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire ⠀ #whyihike #LiveYourAdventure #EBContributor @eddiebauer

After two months of desert, mountains and forested roads, I’ve finally made it back to the coast. Feels good to be back. And, it got me thinking. When the time comes to buy land and put down roots, which do I love more? The mountains or the sea? Initial thoughts...Washington/Oregon vs Idaho/Montana. Life update ↟ For a while now, I’ve been working toward buying and building out a van. This past week, it all started to come together. I could see my way forward. I knew what came next. But instead of taking a leap, I stood still. I stood still because lately, travel has been full-time. Road life has been a challenge. Finding a place to sleep every night, working in coffee shops, deciding where to go next - it can be exhausting. It can get old. So, I entertained the alternative. I toured apartments. I crunched numbers and made budgets. Then, I wondered if I should buy a home. Or a plot of land and a tiny house. Or rent a cabin in the woods and just write. In other words, I spent my time wondering what the hell I was doing with my life. If I’m honest, I still don’t really know. I don’t know how it will all turn out, or if I’ll continue loving life on the open road. But, whatever. I’m building the van. Because at least I know this; Wherever this road goes, it won’t end with a ‘what if.’

Seven years ago I was living in Denver, Colorado. I was working full-time, and rarely had two days off in a row. So, I did my best to cram adventures into 36 hour windows. I’ll never forget the time I packed up my car and drove six hours to Canyonlands and Arches National Park. I didn’t book a hotel. I didn’t have plans. I had never heard of Instagram. I didn’t even pack snacks or own a sleeping bag. By the time I arrived, it was nearly midnight. I was tired, so I tucked a roll of paper towel under my head and curled up beneath my jacket in the front seat. I slept for maybe an hour before waking up to drive, hike & wander aimlessly beneath a star-filled sky. It was my first solo trip out west, and it only lasted 18 hours. It was short, but sweet. It was everything I needed. Standing here again a few weeks ago; hiking the same dusty trail and seeing this delicate arch covered in snow...it was surreal. So many years and seasons between then and now; so many things that have changed. In the best of ways. I couldn’t help but smile. Maybe partly because, at least one thing is the same. I’m still in love with the place. ☽☾

Some things are more precious because they don’t last long ↟ O. Wilde Just crossed into Idaho. Currently sitting at a rest stop, eating yogurt & strawberries while watching the snow fall outside. I have a tank full of gas and nowhere I need to be. This is life on the road, and it’s hard not to be happy. One month I’m hiking snowy trails in Yosemite, and the next I’m soaking up sunshine in Moab. After three weeks in Utah, I’m finally heading back to Washington for who knows how long. Maybe a while, maybe only a few days. Just one major goal in mind...buy a van and schedule the build 🚐 Because for now, I can’t imagine living any other way. Coming soon...road life part 2

I’ve been hanging out in Utah for nearly a week now. No plans to leave just yet...been focusing on building some routine into my life. I wake up at 6, go to the gym, and then journal/meditate before beginning my work day. I love it so far. What time do you normally wake up? I listened to a Tedtalk the other day that said some CEOs wake up as early as 4am. Goals? 🤓
