It's the second to last weekend to catch BEYOND THE STREETS NYC! See you at the show! ⠀ ⠀ @kennyscharf grew up in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles, and moved to New York in the late ’70s to attend the School of Visual Arts, where he became roommates with Keith Haring and found himself in the middle of the 1980s East Village Art movement. In the swirl of the downtown scene, Scharf created his trademark Cosmic Caverns, immersive experiences of Day-Glo paintings and black light that doubled as disco parties. His stylized aliens and colorful Pop icons have garnered widespread recognition and he continues to work in collage, sculpture, painting and performance, based in New York.⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets #nyc #kennyscharf #popicons #sculpture #paintings

JIM PRIGOFF & STOREFRONT MURALS Jim Prigoff assembled one of the most extensive bodies of photo documentation of the global mural movement beginning in the 1970s. By the 1980s, he was photographing graffiti and co-produced the book Spraycan Art with friend Henry Chalfant in 1987, which is now considered a classic tome of modern graffiti. He has contributed to numerous books and projects and continues to lecture as a historian on the topics of public murals, graffiti and spray can art.⠀ ⠀ For the largely teenage and young-adult graffiti writers of New York City, painting murals for local businesses was often their first experience as a professional artist. They might paint a shop mural as a way to make a few bucks and get a stash of paint, as a favor for a friendly neighbor, as a trade for an auto repair or in exchange for the permission to paint whatever they wanted on an adjacent wall. Jim Prigoff documented hundreds of murals like this throughout New York and around the world.⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets ⠀ #nyc ⠀ #jimprigoff ⠀ #storefront ⠀ #graffiti

🏃🏃‍♀️ Only two weeks left to catch Beyond The Streets NYC! Come see the largest graffiti and street art exhibition in the world. Now showing in Brooklyn, NY until Sept. 29!⠀ ⠀ KEITH HARING (1958–1990 ) was one of the most renowned of the young artists whose work responded to urban street culture of the 1980s. Inspired by graffiti artists, whose marks covered New York’s subway cars, Haring began to draw in white chalk over the black paper used to cover vacant advertising panels. The subway became, as Haring said, a “laboratory” for working out his ideas. Before his death, Haring established a foundation in his name to maintain and enhance his legacy of giving to children’s and AIDS organizations. Haring died in New York in February 1990 of AIDS-related complications at the age of 31.⠀ Close up of artwork: Tseng Kwong Chi⠀ Keith Haring, Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York, 1985⠀ Chromogenic print, printed 2014⠀ 60h x 40w in⠀ 152.40h x 101.60w cm⠀ Edition 1 of 5⠀ Photo: Tseng Kwong Chi. © Muna Tseng Dance Projects, Inc.⠀ Artwork: © The Keith Haring Foundation⠀ Courtesy Eric Firestone Gallery⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets #nyc #keithharing #1980 #brooklyn #tsengkwongchi#september

FAB 5 FREDDY, Grandmaster Flash, 2019. Mixed media on canvas⠀ 50" x 50”⠀ Fred Brathwaite (Fab 5 Freddy ) is a visual artist, filmmaker and hip hop pioneer. As a member of the Brooklyn-based graffiti group the Fabulous 5, Fab 5 Freddy made a name for himself in 1979 when he and fellow Fabulous 5 member Lee Quiñones became the first writers to exhibit work abroad at the Galleria Medusa in Rome. A year later he would paint giant Campbell’s Soup cans on a subway train, emulating Andy Warhol’s imagery. He and LEE were cast in the film New York Beat (Downtown 81 ) and in 1981 both were featured in Blondie’s music video for the song “Rapture.” He co-curated the Beyond Words show at the legendary Mudd Club, co-produced the film Wild Style with Charlie Ahearn, and later hosted the first internationally-broadcasted hip hop show, Yo! MTV Raps. He has since directed numerous music videos, invested in hip hop-related business, and written much on the subject of his passion, dedicating his life’s work to the cultures of hip hop and graffiti. Fab 5 Freddy will forever be considered pivotal to the linking of New York’s nascent downtown art, punk rock, graffiti and hip hop scenes.⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets ⠀ #nyc ⠀ #fab5freddy ⠀ #brooklyn ⠀ #hiphop ⠀ #graffiti ⠀ ⠀

🔊 We recommend watching with the sound ON. ⠀ ⠀ Watch @felipepantone and team making #OPTICHROMIE 114 for @beyondthestreetsart NYC. Now on view in the Innovation section on the 6th floor. ⠀ ⠀ Felipe Pantone’s “Optichromie 114,” part of the Optichromie series, stands as his biggest studio work to date. The four pieces forming the diptych are joined together with a system of magnets, demonstrating the elements of ultradynamism common in much of his work. The “Planned Iridescence” installation was created onsite by applying vinyl to both sides of the glass, with patterns reacting to one another and motion activation triggered by a viewer’s horizontal movement. The “Moiré Floor” encourages spectators to move and play with the color moiré phenomenon. The series as a whole is influenced by the digital world and the optical art movement, with the title as homage to master Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Physichromies.⠀ ⠀ Pantone is an Argentinian-Spanish artist who started doing graffiti at the age of 12 and graduated with a fine art degree in Valencia, Spain. His artwork spans from graffiti to kinetic art. High-contrast colors, geometrical patterns and Op Art elements create motion and challenge perspective in a mix of computer-generated graphics, conventional graffiti, typography and abstraction. Pantone lives and maintains his studio in Valencia, Spain.⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets ⠀ #nyc ⠀ #felipepantone ⠀ #innovation ⠀ #dramaticmusic ⠀ #digital ⠀ #opticalart

ESTEVAN ORIOL, A&G Car Show Girls, 1995.⠀ ⠀ @estevanoriol is an internationally celebrated professional photographer, director and entrepreneur. Beginning his career as a club bouncer turned tour manager for popular Los Angeles–based rap groups Cypress Hill and House of Pain, Oriol developed his passion for photography while traveling the world. With an influential nudge and old camera from his father, photographer Eriberto Oriol, he began documenting life on the road and established a name for himself amid the emerging hip-hop scene. Twenty years later, Oriol is world renowned for his signature portraits of famous athletes, artists and musicians, as well as Latino, urban, gang, tattoo and counterculture lifestyles. The ring-clad “L.A. Fingers” photo he took in 1995 that was once rejected by magazines for being too “gang affiliated” pervades as an archetypal Los Angeles image.⠀ #beyondthestreets ⠀ #nyc ⠀ #la ⠀ #losangeles #thisislosangeles #estevanoriol ⠀ #photography

Robert Provenzano, known professionally as CES, is a New York City pioneer of “wildstyle.” The streamlined aerodynamic alphabetic reconfiguration has influenced generations worldwide. Seen through the eyes of a train-painting adventurer, surface textures of rust, metal and concrete contrast the artwork beautifying an otherwise cold, dreary commute. Jason REVOK is a self-taught Los Angeles–based artist who moved to a studio practice after more than 20 years of painting graffiti. He has transcended the boundaries of traditional graffiti, at once building on that foundation and stripping it down to its core essence and intent. @_revok_ ’s studio practice is broad and multilayered. REVOK has appropriated many of the tools once used by his adversaries working against him to erase his existence in the world. Assemblage, sculpture and unique self-made tools — such as a custom-built painting “instrument” housing 12 spray cans with the ability to be deployed simultaneously in one large blast, and massive Spirograph machines custom-designed to use spray paint — are also key components, resulting in an almost machine-like production process that is equal parts painting and performance, embracing missteps and human error. Come see Jason REVOK’s work in the Innovation section on the 6th floor. We are open Thursdays through Sundays 11am to 8pm until September 29th. JANE DICKSON "Shoot the Stars" 2005 Oil stick on linen 48” x 60” @janeinpeepland ’s paintings are on view in the New York City section on the fifth floor. Jane Dickson is the painter of American darkness. First recognized in the early 1980s for her depictions of Times Square, she was part of the politically charged 1980s scene of New York artists working at the intersection of street art, hip-hop, film and installation, where she was an early collaborator with Keith Haring and CRASH, among others. Dickson’s work is currently showcased in the widely reviewed book Jane Dickson in Times Square; in museum exhibitions New York Underground: East Village in the ’80s at the Seoul Art Museum, Korea; Basquiat: The Artist and His New York Scene at the Schunk Art Museum, Heerlen, Holland; and at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery.
