The Adidas Superstar Supershell by @ZahaHadidDesign in collaboration with @Pharrell is now showcased in the ‘Sneaker Collab’ exhibition at the Musée de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains ( @mudaclausanne ) #Switzerland until 26 January 2020. . ‘Sneaker Collab’ at mudac together with @Swisssneaks ch celebrates the cultural and sociological history of sport, focusing on an iconic object that has spread far beyond the sporting world for which it was initially created, entering our daily lives and our urbanity: the sneaker. . The #Adidas Superstar shoe is one of the world’s most popular and recognizable fashion designs. For this 2015 collaboration with Adidas, Pharell Williams curated the Supershell collection of contemporary reinterpretations on the Superstar shoe. . Pharrell invited #ZahaHadid to reinvent the classic shell toe of the #AdidasSuperstar shoe. Hadid’s subtle interpretation is defined by the original structure of the famous Shelltoe, extending the radial pattern of the original design by adding depth and bifurcation. . “I’m a huge fan of Zaha Hadid. I would venture to say that Zaha Hadid is one of the most talented architects of our time and of history in my opinion,” explains Pharrell. “I think that Zaha’s designs are just like her buildings, they augment reality forever. With the Supershell she created, using the iconic shelltoe of the shoe, I feel like she used dimensions of what already exists, and cast shadows that weren’t necessarily there.” . ‘Sneaker Collab’ exhibition Until 26 January 2020 Musée de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains (mudac ) Place de la Cathédrale 6, #Lausanne , Switzerland . #sneakerculture #sneakers #iviich #sneakercollablausanne
Leeza SOHO #Beijing opens 19 November 2019. . Straddling the new subway tunnel that diagonally divides its site, the Leeza SOHO tower rises as a single volume divided into two halves on either side of the tunnel. A central atrium - the world’s tallest - extends 194m through the full height of the building and connects with the metro station below, creating a fantastic new public space for the city. . As the tower rises, the diagonal axis through the site defined by the subway tunnel is re-aligned by ‘twisting’ the atrium through 45 degrees to orientate the atrium’s higher floors with the historic north-south / east-west axis on which the city was founded. . The core and shell development of Leeza SOHO was awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The tower’s double-insulated, unitised glass curtain-wall system steps the glazing units on each floor at an angle, allowing ventilating registers to draw outside air through an operable cavity when required; creating extremely efficient environmental control for each floor. . ICYMI: @ArchDigest Magazine listed Port House in Antwerp as one of the most beautiful examples of historic and modern architecture combining to produce something better than the sum of their parts. “When the two worlds of old and new come together, the result can be awe-inspiring,” explained @ArchDigest ’s @iamnickmafi Opened in 2016 and named ‘Best Refurbished Building’ at the #MIPIM Awards as well as commended by the @ArchitecturalReview ’s ‘New into Old’ Awards, Port House repurposes, renovates and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters for the @PortOfAntwerp - reconnecting the city with the vital activities of its port. With over 12km of docks handling 26% of Europe’s container shipping, Antwerp is the continent’s second largest port, and ambitious targets for expansion to meet Europe’s growth over the next century. Working with heritage consultants @origin_eu , ZHA’s historic analysis of the fire station revealed its unrealised tower. Port House is a composition of a new volume that ‘floats’ above the old building, respecting each of the existing facades and completing the verticality of the original design’s unbuilt central tower. The new extension points towards the city, linking Antwerp with the port on which it was founded. Surrounded by water, the new extension's façade reflects the changing tones and colours of the city’s sky. This perception of a transparent volume, cut to give the new building its sparkling appearance, reinterprets Antwerp’s moniker as the city of diamonds. Including references to the River Scheldt, the city of #Antwerp and the dynamics of its port, married with the successful renovation and reuse of a redundant fire station - integrating the old building as part of the new headquarters – Port House will serve the port well through its planned expansion over future generations. . #TBT : Leicester Square, London (detail ), sectional perspective painting (design competition proposal, 1990 ). . The design re-invents Leicester Square as a public room on the surface of a new subterranean urbanism. . The proposal does not suggest filling the square with fountains or interventions, but instead, turns these structures upside down and sinks them into the ground; solid and transparent skyscrapers slicing downwards creating inhabited canyons flooded with light from above. . #architecture #urbanism #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects

Morpheus Hotel @CityOfDreamsMacau has been named a winner of the @NatGeoTravelUK #BigSleepAwards 2019. . Fantastic video of the Morpheus lobby #reposted from @missyoko Morpheus was designed as a vertical extrusion of the site’s existing abandoned foundations created for a tower that did not progress; using this rectangular footprint to define a 40-storey building of two internal vertical circulation cores connected at podium & roof levels where the many guest amenities were required. Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the central atrium and define the hotel’s spectacular interior public spaces. In-between these voids, a series of bridges create unique spaces for the restaurants, bars and guest lounges by renowned chefs including @AlainDucasse & @PierreHermeOfficial Working with @BuroHappoldEngineering , #ZahaHadid Architects designed the building’s structure to optimise the hotel’s interiors. The world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton, its rich pattern of structural members at lower levels progresses upwards to a less dense grid of lighter members at its summit. . Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts said, “From the very beginning, we shared ZHA’s vision and determination to push boundaries. Morpheus offers a journey of the imagination. From the curved exterior to the dramatic interior spaces, it pleases the eye and excites the senses: a contemporary masterpiece to be enjoyed by many generations to come.” . @TIME Magazine has listed Morpheus Hotel as one of the World’s Greatest Places based on key factors including quality, originality, innovation, sustainability and influence. LLC opened in 2013 as the university’s primary gathering space and place of study. . LLC received a 2014 @RIBA European Award and was also shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award. . “LLC offers within its vast interior a series of stunning, day-lit circulation spaces and attractive working areas that provide an effective social and cultural heart to the university,” explained the RIBA. “The spatial delights of the interior include the outstandingly beautiful, almost polished, finish of the clearly expressed, fair-faced, in-situ concrete structure… the popularity of the library with students and other users as a place for study is clearly evident.” .
#SundayStaircase : @RiversideMuseum #Glasgow – photo by @IwanBaan ・・・ Welcoming over a million visitors to its exhibitions and events every year, the Riverside Museum opened in 2011 and was named ‘European Museum of the Year’ in 2013; becoming one of #Scotland ’s most popular cultural hubs and tourist attractions. ・・・ The @NewYorkerMag explained at the Riverside’s opening: “The building is visually striking, and inside it yields a space that is both dramatic and functional—with the capaciousness of a warehouse but also a sense of movement… the building reveals itself to you as you move through it and experience its curves. The glass walls at either end bring in plenty of daylight, and through the one facing the river you can see a huge nineteenth-century sailing ship permanently anchored next to the museum. There is something sentimental at the heart of any museum whose reason for being is to celebrate the affection we feel for objects that were once part of everyday life, but the Riverside Museum has a boldness that transcends coy nostalgia. This is powerful architecture built to house powerful things. Its easy, flowing quality reminds you that the purpose of this museum is to give these streetcars and fire engines new life in a post-industrial world, in which they are honored rather than used. You begin to understand what #ZahaHadid was trying to do when you look across the river to the lone remaining shipyard, where amid the cranes and drydocks stands a huge metal shed with a zigzagging roof, used for framing hulls. She took the shed as a starting point, but any architect with a pair of eyes could have done that. What Hadid saw was that, in echoing the shed, it was possible to arrive at a perfect metaphor for the evolution of an old industrial city like Glasgow. The city has gone from being a place where people labor at making things to a place where people come to be entertained; Hadid has taken something hard, tough, and workaday and made it fluid and inviting.” .

Aligned at ground level with three of the city’s primary axes that converge within CityLife, the 170m tower connects with its surrounding public piazzas and park; the curvilinear geometries of its podium defined by the perceived centripetal forces generated from the staggered intersection of these three city axes. . This vortex of centripetal forces at ground level is transferred vertically through the tower by realigning successive rhomboid-shaped floor plates to twist the tower about its vertical axis. This helical twist reduces incrementally with the height of each floor above street level, giving all floors a fractionally different relationship to the floors above and below. . As the tower rises offering broader views across the city, the twist orientates the tower's higher floors to the primary southeast axis leading to Bramante’s 15th Century tribune of Santa Maria della Grazie. . The tower houses up to 3,900 employees to meet Generali’s continued growth as one of the world’s largest financial institutions. . With a double facade system, Generali Tower’s high standards of energy efficiency have received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. .

#TBT : Victoria City Areal, Berlin (detail ), aerial perspective painting (design competition proposal, 1988 ). ... Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this site epitomized the city as a urban island; located on a major city axis, the Kurfürstendamn, but completely enclosed and virtually inaccessible. . To create a building in such a fortified context, the proposal intensified its urban density horizontally, dividing the site into new air corridors with three distinct zones that contain the three major functions: shopping district, offices and a hotel. . Because the cruciform site would become the new focus of several major thoroughfares – streets and rail lines – the proposed shopping area is terraced in a concentric relationship to the shops at the fringe of the site. . An extendible system of ‘beams’ with office accommodation is superimposed over the shopping facilities, above which ‘floats’ the angled volume of the hotel. . #Berlin #architecture #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects

Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre in China is one of four projects by #ZahaHadidArchitects shortlisted for the @WorldArchFest #WAF19 Awards. . Harnessing the energy of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to create project with a lasting legacy that has enhanced and also regenerated its setting, the centre acts as both an anchor and a catalyst for future investment in Nanjing’s Hexi New Town. Comprised of two hotel towers that include the new @JumeirahGroup Nanjing, a cultural centre with conference facilities, an urban plaza, offices and mixed-use areas, the development initially provided accommodation for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Now in its legacy stage, the centre has fostered investment in Hexi New Town on multiple levels; integrating additional infrastructure with new functions that include the hotels and a venue for Jiangsu Province’s annual conferences. The cultural centre’s design is a three dimensional calligraphic composition that resonates with #Nanjing ’s 1,600-year-old tradition of Yunjin - the name given to the intricate brocade threading used by local craftsmen to weave the region’s acclaimed gold and silver fabrics. Like Yunjin thread, a continuous line interweaves throughout the cultural centre connecting it with its earthquake-resistant towers and beyond to the new central business district, riverside park and Jiangxinzhou Island. The tapering profiles of the towers, at 255m and 315m ( #ZahaHadid Architects' tallest completed towers to date ), extend the viewer’s sense of perspective and their trapezoidal floor plans maximise their river-facing frontages. Mainland #China ’s first completely top-down/bottom-up tower construction, combining above and below ground construction with extensive design work proceeding in parallel, the project’s construction programme was reduced by a full year. The entire centre was completed 34 months after design began with all works on site lasting only 18 months. .
#SundayStaircase : Named one of Moscow's most beautiful modern buildings, the Dominion office tower was included in the 2016 list of the city’s best new projects. . Located in Moscow’s Sharikopodshipnikovskaya Street, the Dominion is among the first of the new projects to be built for the growing creative and IT sectors in this primarily industrial and residential district in the southeast of the city. Conceived as a series of vertically stacked plates off-set at each level, a central atrium rises through all levels to bring natural light into the centre of the building. Balconies and interconnecting staircases project into the atrium and correspond to the displacement of Dominion’s outer envelope. The atrium becomes a three-dimensional shared space over many levels that encourages interaction between the employees of the companies within the building. The integration also encourages collaboration between companies of different disciplines. Many IT and creative industry start-up companies regard this collective research culture as vital for progress and development, and Dominion’s design reinforces this open connectivity throughout the building. . Beijing Daxing International Airport #PKX is preparing to open on 30 September. Great new video via @CCTV , @CGTN , @SCMPnews With Beijing’s existing airport at capacity, construction of the new Beijing Daxing International Airport began in 2016 and is now complete in preparation to open on 30 Sept this year. The airport will serve 72 million passengers a year by 2025 (630,000 flights/year on 4 runways ) and is designed for expansion to serve 100 million passengers and 4 million tons of cargo annually on 880,000 flights a year (300 take-offs/landings an hour ). The new terminal with rail transportation centre is designed to be extremely user-focussed, efficient and adaptable for future growth; its 6-pier radial design gives exceptional convenience for passengers and flexibility in operations. Flowing parabolic folds within the terminal’s vaulted roof reach to the ground to support the structure and allow natural light within, directing all passengers to the central courtyard. Echoing principles within traditional Chinese architecture that organise interconnected spaces around a central courtyard, the new terminal’s design guides all passengers seamlessly through the relevant departure, arrival or transfer zones towards the grand courtyard at its centre – a multi-layered meeting space at the very heart of the terminal. It’s compact, radial design minimises distances between check-in and gate, as well as minimising distances between gates for transferring passengers. Every aircraft pier radiates from the terminal’s main central court where all passenger services & amenities are located. The airport includes 100% rainwater collection and a solar farm to harvest energy. A fully-integrated transport hub for the Beijing-Tianjin corridor and southern Hebei Province, the airport will offer express trains to city centres and direct connections to regional rail services as well as the national high-speed network.

Created for the 2009 @MIFestival , the JS Bach chamber music pavilion opened ten years ago today. . Designed for solo performances of Bach’s works during the 2009 festival, a voluminous ribbon swirls within the space; carving out a spatial and visual response to the intricate relationships of Bach’s harmonies. The ribbon flows above the performer, cascades to the ground and envelops the audience to enhance the multiplicity of Bach’s work through the integration of formal and structural logic. . The ribbon consists of a translucent fabric membrane articulated by an internal steel structure suspended from the ceiling. The surface of the fabric shell undulates in a constant rhythm as it is stretched over its frame, varying between the highly tensioned skin on the exterior of the ribbon and the soft billowing effect of the same fabric on the interior of the ribbon. Clear acrylic acoustic panels suspended above the stage reflect and disperse the sound, while remaining visually imperceptible within the fabric. . Following its 2009 performances in Manchester, the pavilion travelled to festivals in #Amsterdam (2010 ) and #AbuDhabi (2011 ). . Trains stop at #Lowenhaus station before crossing the bridge over the River Inn, then climbing to Alpenzoo station and on to Hungerburg where passengers can continue their journey on the #Seegrube and #Hafelekar cable cars up to the summit at 2,300m. . Shortlisted by @RIBA for the 2008 #StirlingPrize , #ZahaHadidArchitects designed each station to adapts to its own unique context, topography, altitude and passenger circulation, with glass roofs that echo natural ice formations, like glaciers or frozen mountain streams. . Each station’s lightweight roof structure ‘floats’ above a concrete plinth, creating an artificial landscape that echoes the passenger circulation within. When completed in 2007, the stations were the world’s largest structures using double-curved glass in construction. . Using innovative new design and production methods that have since become mainstream – such as CNC milling, thermoforming, and computational parametric design – enabled precision in translating the fluid geometries of the design into the built structures. . The Hungerburgbahn connects the city of Innsbruck with nature and its stations by #ZahaHadid have become an integral to Innsbruck’s cityscape,” explained Innsbruck mayor Christine Oppitz-Plorer. .
